This chapter begins with Elie's father being extremely ill after the long ten day span without food. Elie attempts to abandon his father, but feels guilty and tries to relieve his father of his pain. Elie wants to spend his energy on trying to help himself survive.
Elie's father is diagnosed with dysentery, which causes him to become really thirtsy. It is harmful to give a man with dysentery, water. As Elie's father is dying in his bead people beat him and steal his food. A Nazi soldier beats Elie's father after he cries out for water. Elie wakes up the next morning finding out that his father had been sent to the crematorium.
Elie is distressed but also have feelings of relief because now he can focus his energy on surviving himself. After the Nazis understand that American Armies are on the way, they decide to kill all of the Jews left in the camps. But before Elie is murdered the American army storms the camp and sets the Jews free. Elie ends the book by saying he looked in the mirror and saw a corpse.

Chapter six and seven
The chapter begins with the evacuation of Buna. Anyone who does not keep running is shot down by the Germans. The Jews end up running about forty two miles that night without food or water. Elie and his father are included in those who survive. They keep each other awake so that they are not out to death.
Another selection occurs and the Nazis decide to put Elie's dad to death. Elie cause a distraction as his dad sneaks away from the ones condemmend for death. They all put on a train that ravels straight for ten days where the Jews get no food. They survive on snow.
Elie flashes forward to a time when a lady was throwing coins at poor boys and watching the boys fight each other for them. He relates this to the fact that people would throw food into the train and watch the Jews fight for it. I believe that we see images like Elie's in our everyday life. For example, its not as extreme, but if someone throws a bag of skittles on the lunch table, I know everyone will fight for it.

pg 66 - 84
In this chapter the time for Jewish Holidays arise. Event though the Jews have been beaten and prosecuted they some how find a way to praise God on these holidays. However Elie cannot bring himself to worship God after seeing all of these dead Jews. He doesn't see how God could let this happen. On Yom Kippur, a Jewish holiday that involves fasting for the forgiveness of sin, Elie decides to eat.
Elie is chosen to work in a building. His father is said to be to weak for this new job and must be put to death. After Elie says goodbye to his father he hears of good news that their was a second selection and Elie's dad made the cut. He was goin to survive. Other Jews are killed because they lose the will to live and lose faith in God.
Winter comes and the Jews are forced to suffer in the cold. The prisoners hear that the Russians are coming to take over the Germans. The German officers decide to evacuate the camps. Elie and his father decide to go with the Germans because they think the Russians will kill them. Later Elie finds out that all the Jews that stayed at the camps were set free by the Russians. So now Elie is stuck with the Germans after he could have been freed.

Pg 47 - 65
This chapter of the book begins with a dentist cheking all the Jews in search of gold crowns. Elie is found with one, but before the dentist takes he is hung. Elie and his father recieve jobs of counting electrical fittings in a civilian warehouse. The German leader of this workforce, Idek, frequently beats Elie and his father. Elie meets a young girl who comforts him after he is beaten.
There is an air raid at the concentration camp. During the raid a prisoner tries to steal some soup. He is shot dead. The Nazis put up a gallows in the middle of the camp where many peoples lives are ended. The jews ask themsevles how God could be present in such cruelty. Elie believe that God has died on the gallows just like one of the children that gets hanged.
I believe this chapter really exploits the cruelty and harsh acts of the Nazis. I could never imagine being put in these situations. It was hard for me to understand why Elie or his father didn't stand up against Idek and fight back. I would have been tempted to swing back.

pg 29 - 46
In this section Elie and his father are separated from the rest of their family. They are told to lie about their age from another prisoner. If they don't lie they will be burned to death because they would be ineligible to work. As they are escorted to the prison they pass the crematorium where children and adults are being burned alive. They Jews begin crying because they fear what will happen to them. In the end of the chapter Elie's father is beaten because he asks to go to the bathroom.
I believe that the Jews should trust God and believe in faith. If they try to rebel they will quickly be killed by the Nazi soldiers. I believe they should try to do everything they are told so there is no reason why they should be killed. However I think if al the Jews were to rebel at once then maybe they could over take the soldiers.
This chapter shows the inhumane lifestyle of the Nazis. Elie tells his father the "Humanity would never tolerate this." To his belief this statement is contradicted everyday. People are shot or stabbed in our life everyday. When someone turns on the news, all the reporters talk about is what bad happened. So even if "Humanity would never tolerate this" it still occurs.

Night Chapter 2
This chapter opens with the Jews on trains heading to concentration camps. The Jews have to suffer through unbearable conditions, such as the intense heat with no room to move. The train stops at Czechslovakian border where a German offcial boards the train and takes over. He vowels to shoot any Jew that doesn't obey what he says.
There is a Jewish woman on board the train who goes crazy because of the harsh treatment. This woman's name is Madame Schacchter and she is with her ten year old son. She begins screaming at night and wakening the other Jews. She claims to have seen a fire outside the train. The other Jews called Madame Schachter crazy, just like Moshe the Beadle. Madam Schacter is beaten by some boys on the train to keep her quiet.
The train eventually reaches Auschwitz station. The are welcomed into the concentration camp with an aroma of burning flesh. They find out they are in concentration camp Birkenau. The Jew's now realize that their suffering is far from over. I believe that most of the Jews will be murdered and Madame Schacter will be the first.

Pg 1 - 22
The book starts out in 1941with a twelve-year-old boy named Elie living in the Transylvanian town of Sighet. He lives with his parents and his three sisters. The family follow strict Jewish tarditions and laws. As a young chile Elie takes an unsual occupation in studying the Talmud, Jewish oral law. Elie studies under well respected teacher Moshe the Beadle.
Transylvanian is annexed by Hungary and the Hungarians force all forgein Jews to leave the country. This forces Moshe to leave the town of Sighet. The Jews soon forgive the Hungarians for forcing foreign Jews to leave. After many months Moshe escapes his captors and returns to Sighet. He tells his fellow Jews that they murdered the others and forced them to dig their own graves. The townspeople believe that Moshe has lost his mind and they don't believe what he says.
In 1944 the Hungarians are taken over by the Nazi germans. The Germans force the Jews to be sent to concentration camps. Untill they are deported the Jews have to live in fenced in areas. Elie's family are one of the last families to be deported. All they Jews found themselves saying "Where were the people taken? Did anyone know?" (pg 18) The chapter ends with Elie's family being deported to Auschwitz where they will be held in a concentration camp. I believe that Elie's family should have snuck away with their former maid when they had the chance. They could have hid from the Nazis and not been sent to the concentration camp.
